Interview Reflection→ What did you learn from your interview? During my interview, I learned that Francisco started to cook in Guadalajara then moved to the United States when he was fourteen years old. He said he first worked as a dishwasher then later being promoted in his position as a cook. The business he has now is his own , also he loves his job. Francisco's business has been up and running here for about twenty-five years in the U.S, and he does not plan to leave anytime soon. The last thing I learned was Francisco leaving to seek a better life and the opportunities that one person can have while living in San Diego. → Why are these interview findings significant (to you)? These interview findings are very significant to me because it gives me a better understanding of what kind of food is served in Mexico and the reason why people come to the U.S. After I listened to him talk about why he moved it made me really think about all the different people trying to leave for a new/better life. It really gives me a new perspective on how I see mexico and the mexican culture, along with the daily life of someone. Another one of the bigger reasons why I find my findings significant is because of the whole process of leaving and starting a whole new life. It takes a lot of time to settle in coming from one country to another. I cannot even imagine the process of Francisco leaving from his home, to find a better one in a state. Also considering Francisco was a young age when he first arrived arrived here. → In what ways do these interview findings tell a story of who your interviewee is, where s/he is from, and what they and their family? These interview findings tell a story of who he is because enchiladas are popular in the Mexican culture. The kind of food we were served tasted much different from what I am used to having in San Diego. To me, the food in Mexico is much more authentic and true to the culture of Mexico. In San Diego, I find that many of the Mexican dishes are fusion dishes. This means they are a mixture of American and Mexican cuisine. Some of the things that I took away from the interview was how bold and strong he was for being able to relocate and move to another country at such a young age. I felt inspired by his story, and it really made me think about all the sacrifices and dangers of beginning a new life in a totally new environment. I believe these changes are made to adhere to the people of San Diego, and their food preferences.

Hoy es 6 De Febrero Me, Myself, and My Potato Salad One thing that struck me while interviewing my Mom is the fact that my great grandma sounded like such a good person/cook and it's very upsetting that I didn't get to meet her. Throughout all of the questions I asked my mom, she was continually describing how all the food that my great grandma cooked was beyond fantastic and how hard she would work to make it. While I was listening to my mother tell me about her childhood, I realized that both she and her mother have so much in common. She also mentioned that my grandmother would always have a cooked meal after school. Now, I just realized that my mother does that for me every day. Similar to how my grandmother was, my mom is also an amazing cook, hard-working, reliable, and just an overall wonderful person to be around. My mother strives to be the best woman possible while still managing her six kids. She does everything possible to make us the happiest we can be, and there is nothing more in the world I can ask for. I find it both unique and weird that my mother learned and is teaching me a meal from my dad's side of the family compared to her mexican side that had many good meals as well, also they are completely different than my persian side. The dish I am making is a Persian dish from my dad’s side and it is called Saladovea, which my grandma taught my mother how to make. I think this dish is very unique, because recipes tend to be passed down from just one side of the family , Now, it is crossbred between two different cultures both persian and mexican. Its very special that these two different type of families pass down these recipes among both mexican and persian. With having both of my families by my side I now realized I can learn so much more from everyone. I also find it very funny that when my mom cooks it for her side the of family. They all boast about how good it is every time they eat it. During the little Christmas parties we have in Los Angeles, my family always asks my Mom if she can cook her special potato salad. Even when my dad’s side of the family comes over, the meal seems to be always served. It started to just become a tradition after we started to eat it the family parties. Before my grandpa passed away, he would always take the potato salad my grandma made, put it in little slices of pita bread, and give me these little sandwiches. I strongly feel like this played a huge role in my life in many ways. It showed me how valuable my family is to me, Everyday I love coming home from school and spending dinner with my family and even having sunday meals with them makes the biggest impact on how I value life and time. The dish name is salado eve and it's a chicken potato salad and it is important to both my mom and dad’s sides of the family. It brings us together in many ways. Food on both sides of the family is a big tradition in itself, but this dish personally means the world to me because of the past and current memories I have with it. For example, I always eat salado eve at family parties and get togethers and everytime I eat it, I get flashbacks of all the amazing and new experiences I have because of it.All the memories from when I first ate it to now is insane, I think I have ate this meal over 200 times and they have always been at family occasions like birthdays, get togethers, weddings. I also have so many relatives it is a very common thing to eat saladoeve. I hope to pass this recipe on to all of my family when I grow up and have children and have it continue for generations and so forth. |
